7 Signs Your Parent May Need More Help at Home

It often starts with small things. A missed medication. An unpaid bill. A fridge with nothing fresh inside.

For adult children — especially those living in another city — recognizing when a parent needs more support can be one of the hardest judgment calls you'll face. You don't want to overreact. But you also don't want to wait too long.

Here are seven signs that your parent may benefit from additional support:

1. Changes in Personal Hygiene If your usually well-groomed parent starts neglecting bathing, laundry, or grooming, it may indicate physical difficulty, cognitive changes, or depression.

2. Unexplained Weight Loss Significant weight loss can signal difficulty cooking, loss of appetite, or underlying health issues that aren't being addressed.

3. Increased Forgetfulness While some memory changes are normal with aging, repeatedly forgetting medications, appointments, or recent conversations may need attention.

4. Home Condition Declining Look for expired food, piling mail, unusual clutter, or maintenance issues that your parent would normally address.

5. Social Withdrawal If your parent is declining invitations, skipping activities they used to enjoy, or seems more isolated, loneliness may be setting in.

6. Difficulty with Mobility New bruises, a reluctance to use stairs, or holding onto furniture while walking can indicate fall risk.

7. Caregiver Burnout (If Applicable) If a spouse or family member is providing care, watch for signs that they're overwhelmed too.

What to Do Next The most important step is starting a conversation — not from a place of worry, but from a place of care. Ask open-ended questions. Listen. And know that seeking support is a sign of love, not failure.
